The decision on the strike was made after the failure of negotiations between the trade unions and employers' organizations on the restoration of the automatic indexation system (abbreviated - COLA).

 - This is a bonus to salaries taking into account the cost of life and inflation, introduced in Cyprus in 1944. It was canceled during the financial crisis of 2013 and partially (50%) was restored in 2018.

On January 26, 2023, a universal three -hour strike was held in Cyprus. It has become one of the largest from the 50s of the 20th century. The action was attended by thousands of hired workers, including officials, doctors, teachers, judges and police officers.

The audience demanded to restore Cola in full. In the end, an agreement was reached that from June 1, 2023, the Cola rate will grow from 50% to 66.7% of the annual change in consumer prices.

This time, trade unions require 100%, which does not find understanding with employers. On August 29, their negotiations in the Ministry of Labor were at a dead end. On September 1, trade unions stated that they had no other way left but to declare a general strike.
