From Cyprus to Israel, swimming

From Cyprus to Israel, swimming

In October 2003, Briton Gregory Charles Sheiffe decided to swim from Cyprus to Israel. The unlucky pilgrim was about to visit the holy places of Jerusalem. This is what came of it.

The 39-year-old British tourist arrived at Larnaki Airport from London on October 11, 2003. He had a little money and a passport with him, there was no baggage. The man wanted to get from Cyprus to Israel to visit the holy places of Jerusalem. At the airport, he asked the employee how far Israel was and received the answer that it was about 50 minutes. It is not clear how the Briton understood these words, because the indicated time is the duration of the air travel, not the swim.

Having studied the card, the man was convinced that the distance is small. He sat in a taxi and headed from the airport straight to Kavo Greco. There he took off his clothes, left her on the shore, tied money and a passport to his wrists and swam towards Israel.

After about five sea miles from the shore, forces began to leave him. He threw off the money and passport because they began to interfere. For his happiness, a private yacht swam by, which picked it up and delivered it to the shore.

The police became interested in a suspicious man. But during the interrogation it turned out that Shefert really planned to get to Israel to get to go. He was released without charges.

The distance between Israel and Cyprus is approximately 200 sea miles. In 2014, the Israeli group of Sea Defenders made of six swimmers made an open waterplain voyage from Cyprus to Israel. Their swim was listed in the Guinness Book of Records as the longest relay voyage in open water. The team overcame the distance in five days and ten hours. Each of the participants sailed for an hour, after which he was replaced by the next. The purpose of the swim was to attract attention to the problems of sea pollution and collecting funds to protect the marine environment. During the entire route, the participants were accompanied by a support ship that ensures the safety and supply of the team.
