By the end of August, there were 4.37 million Ukrainian citizens in the European Union who had received temporary protection status.
There are 24,475 Ukrainians living in Cyprus, which puts the island in third place in the EU in terms of the number of status recipients in terms of population - 25 people per 1,000 inhabitants. However, Cyprus is not among the countries with the largest total number of refugees from Ukraine. The leaders remain:
Germany - 1,210,515 people (27.7% of the EU total), Poland - 995,925 people (22.8%), Czech Republic - 385,655 people (8.8%).
If we take into account the share of Ukrainians per 1,000 inhabitants, then Cyprus ranks third after the Czech Republic (35.4) and Poland (27.3). By comparison, the EU average is 9.7.
Ukrainian citizens make up 98.4% of all temporary protection recipients in the EU. Since the beginning of the military operation in February 2022, Cyprus has become one of the popular countries for Ukrainians to move to.
By the end of 2023, over 20,000 people had arrived on the island, making Cyprus one of the EU leaders in the proportion of temporary protection status granted since the start of the conflict.
According to official data, in 2022–2023 the Cypriot government allocated €44.4 million to support and accommodate Ukrainian refugees. In 2022, living expenses amounted to €10.1 million, in 2023 - €29.3 million. In addition, the Department of Social Security reported that Ukrainian citizens were paid: €2.1 million in the form of a guaranteed minimum income in 2022 and another €1.8 million in 2023.
