The performances of the production of Stage 018 The King's New Clothes, an adaptation of Hans Christian Andersen's play by Paraskeva Karasoulos and Nikandros Savvidis, directed by Marina Vrontis, continue with great success.
Hans Christian Andersen's The King's New Clothes is a much-loved classic from our childhood that today seems to reflect our world in a strange way. The story is more or less familiar: a vain king, obsessed with his appearance, falls victim to swindlers who promise him the most magnificent garment, made of fabrics that only fools can see. The people, the ministers and the officials, fearing to be exposed, are also drawn into the fantasy, pretending to see the non-existent garment. And so, the king parades naked. In our theatrical version, however, there are many voices of honesty who break down social barriers to simply tell the truth.
Paraskevas Karasoulos and Nikandros Savvidis reintroduce the timeless story of the Danish writer, weaving a modern musical drama, rich in dialogues, action and characters. The plot, sarcastic against the vanity and delusion of power, illuminates concepts that are at the heart of everything we do: persistence and courage, honesty and truth, critical thinking and self-awareness.
This living story doesn't just stay on paper; it takes flesh and bones on stage through the directorial eye of Marina Vrontis, who returns to Stage 018 to set up a colorful and frenetic stage play. In a revelatory setting, where everything is both hidden and visible, the show's nine actors share an acting code that is daring, physically expressive and funny and subtly winks at the audience, who are watching it all, holding out a mirror where whoever looks inside will recognize their reflection – even if it's distorted.
