Strovolos Municipality has begun to address the problem at the “controversial” Nicosia General Hospital roundabout leading to Geri Latcha. Work has begun on installing traffic lights that will change the usual traffic pattern.
Department of Public Works traffic expert and engineer Alexis Augustis said a recent study conducted on new commercial development in the area found an increase in traffic during certain hours of the day, especially on Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. This necessitated the installation of traffic lights to regulate traffic.
“The study found that traffic lights should be installed at the partially operational intersection on Kalamon Avenue, starting from the Kalamon roundabout to the intersection and at the opposite exit at Gehry. Traffic lights will also be installed inside the interchange,” Augustis explained.
The traffic lights will operate at specific hours to increase the roundabout's capacity, improve traffic flow and ensure safety during peak hours. They will be self-regulating, equipped with radar systems on poles about six meters high, which will be able to record traffic and vehicle flows at all exits and entrances.
It is important to note that traffic lights will only be installed at two exits from the roundabout.
