A young flamingo found weak and in distress in Cyprus has been given the help it needs, released and game officials are now recording its journey using a GPS transmitter placed on its body.
Today, as can be seen on the map, it is located in the occupied part of Famagusta, at the mouths of the Pediai and Gialia rivers. Previously, he visited lakes in the interior of Turkey, stayed for a short time and returned back to our island.
“This is a young bird, a so-called nomad, which selects habitats depending on conditions and which wetlands are in good condition and provide food. Such birds move in search of food and can fly all over the Mediterranean,” said Nikos Kasinis, a senior hunting service officer. He said that the story of this flamingo began in Larnaca when it was found in a weak state. The bird was taken to the Game Service's treatment center where, with the help of a private veterinarian, it was treated and released into the wild in the Akrotiri area. Kasinis noted that transmitters have been installed on other rescued flamingos over the past 10 years.
The prolonged drought has affected the migration of thousands of birds to the lakes of Cyprus. This year recorded the lowest number of arrivals in recent decades.
“There is no water in Alik, in some places in Akrotiri, in Larnaca it is completely empty. If there is no significant rainfall in the fall, we will not have significant numbers of flamingos,” emphasized Kasinis.Source: alphanews.live
