An incident occurred in the sanctuary of Apollo Gilates near Limassol, which caused outrage among both employees of the archaeological complex and local residents.
A group of tourists showed disrespect for the monument: they climbed to the top of the structure, trying to take spectacular photographs, ignoring the rules for protecting the historical site.
According to the administration, visitors came down only after persistent warnings from employees who noticed the violation while walking around the territory. Images depicting the inappropriate behavior of tourists soon appeared on social networks and caused widespread discussion, especially since the sanctuary is considered one of the most important archaeological sites in Cyprus, where access to certain structures is strictly limited to preserve their integrity.
The police have already begun checking the circumstances of the violation, considering possible fines. Representatives of the Department of Antiquities stressed that such actions could cause irreparable damage to structures that are thousands of years old, and reminded that respect for cultural heritage is the responsibility of every visitor.
