The effort of the United Nations "Development Program" to open the roads in Gaza City is underway.
It is a large-scale operation that involves removing debris from the city's main thoroughfares to facilitate access to essential services such as hospitals and schools.
Yesterday, the UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs, Tom Fletcher, accompanied by the representative of the "Development Programme", Jaco Cilliers, visited Gaza City for a first assessment of the debris removal process.
Cilliers estimated that there are about 60 million tons of rubble that needs to be removed.
The completion of this effort is considered a critical first step on the long road to rebuilding the Palestinian enclave.
