Residents of the village of Polemi, which is located in the Paphos area, complain about poachers who illegally hunt in the immediate vicinity of houses and schools.
According to them, despite the existing danger, the competent authorities still have not reacted in any way. In turn, the representative of the hunting service and fauna said that hunting is prohibited only in a radius of 200 meters from residential buildings and 500 meters from residential areas. According to him, the polery is one of the zones that are designated on the map as permitted for hunting. He emphasized that the situation with poachers and hunting as a whole is much better than 15-30 years ago. The laws became stricter, and fines increased. At the same time, it turned out that the polem is not the only community that is faced with the problem of poaching. In two years, only one arrest was produced, and residents continue to experience fear. The leader of the village said that he wrote an official letter and sent him to the hunting service and fauna.
This problem has been observed for more than a year, and although the competent authorities have known about it, no effective measures or decisions for its solution, it seems, has not been taken. Poachers operate in areas adjacent to residential buildings, as well as next to the secondary and senior polemi school, which creates a serious threat to the safety of residents, especially children attending school, as this illegal phenomenon is observed on different days and hours. This situation cannot continue and requires immediate intervention of the competent authorities, the letter says.
Now it is expected that the Wild animal protection service will take the initiative to search for more effective ways to solve the problem and calm the fears of the inhabitants.
