In the evening, January 28, incidents with the participation of football hooligans took place in Limassol.
The police were forced to use tear gas to accelerate a group of fans, among whom were masked people armed with baseball bats. As a result of the clash, one law enforcement officer suffered.
The incident occurred during the match of the second handball division between Apollo and Omonia 29m at the Covered Apollo Stadium. The hall was attended by about 300 fans of the hosts, there were no officially supporters of the guest team in the stands.
Around 21:25 there was information that about 100 fans of OMONIA 29M, hiding their faces under the hoods and armed bits, gathered near the stadium. They started moving towards a sports facility, which caused an immediate reaction of the police.
Law enforcement officers who were at the scene took measures to contain the crowd. In order to prevent riots, tear gas was used, after which the fans began to diverge. However, during the clashes, one of the police officers was easy to wound on the legs, presumably from an abandoned object.
The police continue to investigate the incident and considers the possibility of holding the perpetrators to justice. The authorities urge fans to observe order and warn of strict measures in case of repeated incidents.
