Damascus International Airport, which was closed after the Syrian capital fell to rebels, is preparing to reopen "within the next few days," its director Anis Faluch said.
"God willing, the airport will reopen as soon as possible, we are working non-stop," he assured. He gave no timetable but said the airport should be back up and running "in the next few days".
"We can soon allow aircraft to fly in Syrian airspace, which was closed," he noted.
An AFP correspondent saw armed rebels deployed around the airport and employees working inside the building, surrounded by members of the new authorities' security forces.
The Syrian army and security forces left the Damascus airport early Sunday morning in the face of the rebel advance.
Samer Radi, in charge of aircraft maintenance, said the current fleet consists of 12 aircraft, eight of which are Airbus A320-20s.
A curfew has been lifted in the Syrian capital
The lifting of the curfew in Damascus and its surroundings was announced today by the General Administration of the rebels who seized power in Syria, adding that all employees of public organizations and institutes can return to their posts.
"Order of the command of military operations: Dear residents of the city of Damascus and its surroundings, we inform you that the command has lifted the curfew in the city and we also call on our compatriots to return to work in the institutions," said the statement, which published in the Syrian newspaper Al-Watan.
The opposition imposed a curfew in Damascus on Monday afternoon in an attempt to stop mass looting in the capital's central districts and gain control of what is happening in the city.
