Police and prison authorities in Cyprus are on high alert following the escape of dangerous criminal Theodoros Theofanos, 37, imprisoned and convicted of a brutal double murder in 2011.
Theofanos was allowed to visit relatives in Paphos, but managed to escape under unclear circumstances, despite being escorted by a member of the police special forces unit (MMAD).
The crime committed by Theofanos shocked Cyprus, the criminal was sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of his 24-year-old pregnant common-law wife and their three-year-old daughter. The crime occurred in December 2011 out of jealousy. The bodies of the victims were found near the coastal area of Geroskipou. The woman was shot and the daughter strangled.
Cyprus police are conducting a large-scale search for Theofanos. The circumstances of the escape are being clarified.
