Fourteen wild donkeys were found dead in the area of the village of Rizokarpaso on the occupied part of Cyprus. These animals have long become a symbol of the region. The inexplicable mass murder caused a wide public outcry.
In animals, gunshot wounds were found. At the moment, it was possible to establish that the donkeys were shot from a shotgun and from close range. One of the donkeys, perhaps, was killed right in the process of childbirth (according to a number of media outlets, she was pregnant, but did not give birth). The tragedy is investigated by the police of an unrecognized state.
It is possible that other killed animals will be found in this area. The leader of the Cipriot Turks Ersin Tatars said that he would personally monitor the progress of the investigation and expects the guilty of the crime will be established.
The wild donkeys of the Peninsula of Carpasia became an unofficial symbol of these places and the entire island. They are known for the fact that they surround the cars of tourists and ask for carrots, fruits of an open tree or other treats.
Earlier, wild donkeys roamed the peninsula freely, but then they were caught and brought to the national park at the extreme northeastern end of Carpasia.
However, over time, they migrated back into populated areas and began to interfere with agriculture and road traffic. Farmers have repeatedly complained that donkeys were destroying crops. The problem becomes more acute at the beginning of the harvest season. Read more about this here.
In Cyprus, two breeds of wild donkeys are distinguished: large, dark with a light belly (probably European origin) and a small gray (allegedly falling on Cyprus from Africa).
