The protest of Cyprus hunters, which began on Sunday, ended after an hour and a half after the participants threatened to block the Nikosia-Limassol highway for an indefinite period.
President of Cyprus Nikos Khristodulidis personally intervened, contacting the head of the Association of Hunters Nicholas Proprome. As a result of negotiations, an agreement was reached on a meeting in the presidential palace on Monday, March 24.
The protest started at noon in the area of Scarin. About 5,000 hunters took part in it, who blocked all four lanes, and also arranged a barbecue directly on the roadway. The stream was redirected to the old road between Nicosia and Limasol, and the police called on the drivers to caution.
It is worth noting that the basic requirements of the hunters concerned:
T tightness of fines for illegal hunting, since, according to them, the situation got out of control; protection against the actions of activists, which hunters call “illegal”; appointments of the head of the hunting fund exclusively from among licensed hunters; hard punishment for poaching; the development of photoelectric farms in state lands.
The deputy from the DISY party Nikos Tornaritis said that road locks will be discussed in the law committee of the parliament. He called it “antisocial and unacceptable behavior” and expressed concern about the lack of proper response by the police.
At the moment, the fate of the requirements of hunters remains the issue of discussing at a meeting with the president.
