A furious fight between wild mouflons near a watering hole on the edge of the Troodos forest was caught on hidden camera footage from the Game and Wildlife Service.
The incident occurred between the Kampos and Ambelikos districts. One mouflon rammed his opponent with his horns from a running start. The blow was so strong that the attacking mouflon made a coup. Fortunately, none of the louts were seriously injured.
Conflicts between male mouflons during the mating season, which begins in October, are common and occur primarily to establish dominance over a territory. In some cases, such fights can lead to serious injury and sometimes death to one of the participants.
This is not the first time cameras have captured scenes like this. About two years ago, Game Service officers discovered two males in the Dead Zone, near the Xeros River, whose antlers had become entangled during a fight, putting their lives in danger. Thanks to the prompt intervention of security officers, the wild animals were freed and released without consequences to their health.
