The summer season in pathos traditionally brings not only sunny days and influx of tourists, but also a serious load on the infrastructure of the city.
This year, a significant increase in the number of vacationers again exacerbated the need to create a specialized group of rescuers on motorcycles - the so -called motorbits who can quickly respond to emergency challenges in conditions of dense traffic.
According to local authorities, in the tourist zones of the city, especially in the coastal part of the Kato Paphos, the movement is often difficult due to pedestrian zones and a large number of cars. This slows down the work of traditional ambulances and, in some cases, can cost precious minutes on which human life depends.
Back in July 2024, this issue was officially raised at a meeting of the municipal council. Then, the Cyprus Ministry of Health sent a written appeal with a proposal to introduce the service of the motorists. The minister showed interest in the initiative, and in February 2025 a second request was sent to the ambulance service to accelerate the decision.
The municipal adviser to Paphos Antonis Christodul noted that ambulance motorcycles can quickly get to patients in cases of cardiac arrest, serious injuries or sudden fainting. This will reduce the load on ordinary ambulances, especially during peak hours and in remote areas, and will also increase the level of security, which will positively affect the tourism reputation of the city.
Such units have long been successfully working in other tourist regions of Cyprus and abroad. Their effectiveness has been proven in practice: thanks to maneuverability, motorcycles can be reached where a large -sized ambulance car will linger in traffic. Paphos, as one of the leading resorts of the island, intends to follow this example and introduce an innovative emergency system that meets international standards.
