Journalist Yorgos Tattis and Turko-Kipr political activist Oz Karakhan did not recognize the charges against him during the trial that began in the district court Nicosia.
The case is connected with the incident on October 1, 2024, when at a military parade on Independence Day, they tried to deploy a banner with the inscription “Cyprus Republic: the only decision” in Greek, Turkish and English.
According to their lawyer Socrates Czazas, despite the fact that the defense has not yet received a complete set of evidence, both defendants rejected all five points of the prosecution. Among them - an attack on a police officer, resistance during detention, violation of public order, a public insult and a second attack on a representative of law and order.
The hearing in the case will continue on October 22, when the court hears the testimony of three witnesses from the prosecution.
In support of Tattis and Karakhan, about twenty people came to the courtroom. At the court building, they hung the same banner, which caused the arrest of activists. In the occupied territories, threats to Karakhan and the movement to which he belonged before.
