The arrest warrant was issued on Saturday, October 18. The suspect is a 44-year-old Greek Cypriot, previously known to police and a former footballer.
The investigation believes that he is the owner of a large scooter used by criminals to escape after setting fire to a vehicle (van) in the Germasogeia area.
The operatives, having received specific information, went to the beach in front of one of the hotels in Agios Tychonas, where they found a black scooter, allegedly left by the killers.
Police continue to collect evidence, including traces from the crime scene and from the burned-out van, in which, according to investigators, the criminals destroyed evidence, including bullet casings.
A forensic examination carried out by expert Nicholas Charalambous showed that two bullets hit Demosthenous on the left side of his head. He allegedly spotted the attacker and tried to evade, falling to the right. Death came instantly.
The investigation classifies the murder as a mafia massacre, carefully planned and carried out professionally.
The name of Demosthenus appeared on the list of targets of criminal structures. Although he had personal guards, they did not accompany him constantly.
The police are considering the possibility that representatives of the Russian mafia, with whom the businessman might have had disagreements, may be behind the murder.
Investigators believe that the criminals carefully monitored the movements of Demosthenus. At the time of the attack, he was in the car with his son. The attacker, while inside the van, opened fire through the hood and windshield, aiming for the passenger seat.
The investigation is ongoing and the Cyprus Police have mobilized all services to establish the whereabouts of the suspect and possible accomplices.
The funeral of Stavros Demosthenous will take place on Monday, October 20, 2025 at 12:30 at the Church of Agios Cosmas of Aitolian in the area of Agios Athanasias. Interment will take place at Sfalanghiotissa Cemetery.
The family of the deceased asks everyone who comes to see him off on his last journey to wear white as a symbol of peace and blessed memory. In lieu of wreaths, donations are suggested to the Association of Parents and Friends of Children with Cardiovascular Diseases.
