In the early morning on Wednesday, August 20, a large -scale fire broke out in Ipsonas in a paper factory warehouse, which forced the authorities to evacuate the residents of nearby quarters and block the entrances and trips to the disaster area.
The message about the fire arrived at about 2:00 in the morning. According to the press secretary of the fire service Andreas Kettis, outfits from Limassol arrived at the place, the EMAK unit and the fire engine from the British bases-10 cars participated in the extinguishing.
“When our employees arrived at the place of fire covered the entire territory of the warehouse. The neighboring residential buildings were at risk. The temperature was colossal, it was unrealistic to penetrate the territory of the factory. We focused efforts on extinguishing around the perimeter of fire and protection of houses, ”Kettis said.
As a result of the fire, two residential buildings were injured. In the factory there were also containers with gas cylinders, which caused a series of explosions and put firefighters under a serious threat. “We did not know about the existence of these cylinders, since the factory was registered as a warehouse of paper,” the representative of the service emphasized.
Eyewitnesses report that smoke is still rising from the place of disaster.
The police said that the Limassol -Paphos highway in the Ipsonas area, as well as several adjacent roads, remain blocked. Police officers regulate the movement and help local residents.
