On Tuesday, February 18, the Minister of Justice of Cyprus Marios Harziotis announced the creation of local crime prevention in Limasol.
This pilot project, which started in November 2024, is aimed at strengthening interaction between the police, citizens and local authorities.
How will it work?
Tips will develop local security strategies, support alternative decentralized approaches to crime prevention. Their work will be built on the active participation of the company and close interaction with the law enforcement agencies.
Harziotis expressed confidence that the successful experience of Limasol will be scaled throughout the island. He emphasized that without the support of society and cooperation between local authorities, the police and other ministries, it is impossible to effectively prevent crimes.
Among the measures that have already taken:
The district police were introduced. Observers of the districts are made. Social workers are involved.
The results of the work of local councils will be transferred to the central coordination body, which will unite ministers of education, healthcare, social security and justice. This body will develop unified anti -Criminal strategies together with the police.
Recall that in 2022 the crime rate in Cyprus increased significantly. 584 cases were registered on the island for 100,000 residents, while in 2021 this indicator was 501, and in 2020 - 482. The main types of crimes in Cyprus remained and offenses against property.
The mayor of Limasola Yannis Armeftis said that the purpose of the municipality is to make the city a safer, cohesive and favorable for life.
“Thanks to enlightenment, cooperation and preventive mechanisms, we can create an environment where every resident will feel protected and youth will have equal opportunities for development,” the mayor emphasized.
Similar tips for the prevention of crime are already operating in Austria, Croatia and Greece. Cyprus is preparing to adopt and adapt their best practices.
