At 4:45 am on Saturday, January 10, a bus carrying members of the Cyprus handball team overturned on the Tallinn-Tartu highway. Two victims were taken to the Tartu University Hospital. The accident occurred due to a sharp deterioration in weather conditions: strong winds, heavy snowfall and blizzards.
According to Delfi, there were 23 people on the bus. He was on his way to a match with the Estonia national team, which was scheduled for the evening of Sunday, January 11, in the town of Põlva in the southeast of the country. This is the return game of the 2028 European Championship pre-qualification. In the first meeting, held on Wednesday, January 7, in Nicosia, Estonia won with a score of 31:27.
— I am now going to Tartu with a representative of the Cyprus national team to pick up two players. The rest traveled to Põlva on a spare bus, but when the adrenaline subsided, eight more people went to the emergency department in Põlva, where they were examined by doctors. I also contacted the European Handball Federation. We are monitoring the situation. The most important thing is people's health. The match is now of secondary importance,” said Pirje Orasson, Secretary General of the Estonian Handball Union.
The breathalyzer test of the 53-year-old driver gave a zero result. The bus tires were winter.
