An unthinkable medical error occurred in one of the private Cyprus clinics.
The young patient underwent surgery, during which he was established by a synthetic implant with an expired shelf life. 10 days after surgery, he began serious complications.
The victim’s family found out a disturbing fact by accident: studying medical documents after the operation, relatives noticed that the implant shelf life expired in August 2024.
Representatives of the supplier's company admitted their mistake, explaining that the expired implant entered the batch of medical devices placed in the clinic. However, they also emphasized that the surgeon and medical personnel did not pay attention to the clearly indicated date of expiration of the expiration date on the packaging.
The patient is currently undergoing treatment in a state hospital, where doctors are trying to eliminate the consequences of using a poor -quality implant.
The company that made the supply of an expired implant tried to soften the situation, saying that the expiration of the expiration date affects only the sterility of the product, but not on its safety. However, experts indicate that manufacturers of such medical devices cannot guarantee their effectiveness and safety after the completion of the shelf life.
The Ministry of Health of Cyprus said that it was ready to support the victim, but it emphasized that at the moment neither the patient himself nor his family filed an official complaint.
The operation was carried out in a private clinic operating as part of the general healthcare system (HESSI). Details of the incident have not yet been disclosed, but the situation has already attracted the attention of the medical community and the public.
