On Thursday, September 11, the chairman of the workers' union of the northern electricity authority Kib-Tek, Ahmet Tugcu, reported an explosion of an electrical panel at Ercan Airport.
The incident occurred on Saturday evening. Tugcu noted that a serious disaster was miraculously avoided and no one was hurt. He said the explosion was caused by Kib-Tek's lack of proper inspections, which are required by law.
“Are you waiting for someone to die before you start doing your job?” - said Tugcu, criticizing the management for its negligent attitude towards security. He also cited previous incidents in March in which a worker was burned while carrying out unauthorized work.
Tugcu emphasized that one of the reasons for the explosions is the use of transient current, which creates serious risks for the airport. Despite the opening of the new terminal 14 months ago, the system has not yet been brought back to normal operation.
In addition, Tugcu accused the airport operator of non-payment of electricity bills. According to him, the debt to Kib-Tek reached 92 million Turkish lira, but “political instructions” prevented the airport from cutting off power, despite the huge debts.
