A TikTok clip with an excerpt from a YouTube video by Turkish YouTuber Hasan Piker attracted the attention of netizens.
In the video, Hassan, known for his activist stance, acknowledges the occupation of Cyprus as "illegal" while discussing the origins of a dish his guest claims is Turkish.
The plot centers on a dispute about the origin of Cypriot baked pasta, or Pastitsio or Firin macarna. “It’s debatable,” says Hassan, “it could be Greek. This is from Cyprus, and the northern part of Cyprus is occupied by Turkey. The rest of the world considers this an illegal occupation,” the YouTuber said, causing confusion on the guest’s face.
The situation takes a funny turn when Hassan approaches his mother with the same question. She assures him that the dish is Turkish and is one of her favorites.
TikTok users quickly reacted to Hasan's frankness. One of the comments under the video reads: “Interesting... Hassan openly admits the illegal occupation of Cyprus by Turkey.” Another user joked: “Hassan is me at family feasts.”
However, there were also cultural differences. Greek commentators clarified: “This is pastitsio.” In fact, this dish is called differently depending on the country: in Egypt it is known as “bechamel pasta”, in Turkey as “firin makarna”, and in Cyprus “Pastitsio”.
Picker's honest approach to a politically sensitive topic sparked heated discussions and earned the respect of many viewers.
