On September 3, two US military personnel were attacked in the port city of Izmir. They were members of the crew of the American aircraft carrier USS Wasp, which recently left Limassol.
According to the US Navy, two Marines who were on leave were victims of the attack. Other US military personnel who noticed the incident took the victims to a local hospital, where they received the necessary care.
The governor of Smyrna confirmed that his office is investigating the incident. According to sources, the attack was organized by members of the Turkish left-wing nationalist, Kemalist revolutionary youth organization the Turkish Youth Association (TBG), closely linked to the Motherland Party. A video allegedly depicting this event is already circulating on social networks, but its authenticity has not yet been confirmed.
This incident became an example of the manifestation of anti-American sentiment caused by the US presence in the region. The attackers shouted slogans condemning the actions of the US military in the Middle East, declaring: “American soldiers bear the blood of thousands of Palestinians on their hands and should not infect our country.”
