On December 13, Mehmet Dana, the representative of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) to the UN, criticized statements made by Cypriot Ambassador to the UN Maria Michael and Permanent Representative of Greece Evangelos Sekeris.
According to him, their statements distort the facts and increase tensions between Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots.
A letter with his appeal was submitted to the UN by the Deputy Permanent Representative of Turkey.
Dana accused the Cypriot side of pursuing a policy aimed at isolating the Turkish Cypriots. He said this limits their international representation, right of movement and economic opportunity.
In his address, he noted that Turkish Cypriots are actively working to resolve issues such as property disputes, the fate of missing persons and the preservation of cultural heritage. However, according to him, the Greek side is neglecting its obligations in these areas.
Dana also defended the actions of the Turkish Cypriot side in Varosha, calling them legal and beneficial for both communities.
In the letter, the TRNC representative reaffirmed his commitment to negotiations based on the principle of sovereign equality, calling for the abandonment of approaches that, in his opinion, have previously proven ineffective.
He stressed the importance of trust and cooperation to achieve reconciliation, calling on the Greek Cypriot side to focus on creating conditions for constructive dialogue.
“Our state is ready for formal negotiations to build structured cooperation with the Greek Cypriot side, subject to recognition of sovereign equality and equal international status,” Dana noted.
He also added that the statements of the Greek and Greek Cypriot sides, in his opinion, do not correspond to legal and historical facts.
In conclusion, he called for abandoning baseless accusations and focusing on creating an atmosphere conducive to cooperation.
