Young participants of the European Erasmus program who climbed the monument to take photographs were given free entry to the territory of the Sanctuary of Apollo of Hylates in the Limassol area!
The director of the Department of Antiquities, Giorgos Georgiou, said this on the Alpha Update program, calling their act unacceptable, stupid and reprehensible.
According to him, the group made a request in advance for a free visit, and the department agreed to meet it, since such initiatives support educational and cultural projects.
Despite this, the young people showed disrespect both for the employees of the Department and for the monument itself, which has deep historical and spiritual significance. Georgiou emphasized that such actions undermine the value of cultural heritage and can lead to damage to unique archaeological sites.
He noted that such incidents become a reason to reconsider the policy of openness, because the preservation of ancient shrines requires responsibility and respect.
