On December 15, Cypriot President Nicos Christodoulides strongly condemned the wave of violence that took place across the country over the weekend, as teenagers clashed violently with police, leaving chaos and destruction in their wake.
Fire officials said the teens burned Christmas decorations, tires, trash cans and school property. A total of 67 incidents were recorded. Police arrested 23 people, 21 of whom were minors.
In one of the episodes in Larnaca, the father of a teenager was detained, who came to the police station to pick up his son and found himself in a state of severe alcoholic intoxication - the level of alcohol in his blood was three times higher than the norm.
Christodoulides urged parents to take responsibility for their children's behavior.
“We're talking about kids who are 13, 14, 15 years old. What we saw was particularly disturbing. The state is obliged to protect its citizens, but parents must also take an active part in education,” the president emphasized.
According to police, the unrest began on Friday evening when young people organized a protest under a provocative slogan. During the incidents, police were attacked with stones, fireworks and flares.
The most violent clashes occurred in Larnaca, where 10 people were arrested. Nine arrests took place in Nicosia and four more in Limassol. In Limassol, 25 incidents were reported, including burning of tires and rubbish bins.
President Christodoulides said such acts should not go unpunished and called for stronger cooperation between government authorities and parents to prevent similar cases in the future.
Let us remind you that a similar celebration of ACAB Day is held in Cyprus every year.
