Judge Doria Varoshiot, who decided in 2024 that the death of the National Guard Tanasis Nikolau in 2005 was the result of a criminal offense, would not be transferred to a permanent position upon completion of a two -year trial period.
On Monday morning, on June 30, a notification was posted in Limassol’s district court in which lawyers were informed about the completion of the Judicial Service of Varoshiot and the transfer of the cases it under consideration.
Recall that in 2024, Judge Varoshiot canceled the previous conclusions of Nicholas suicide, recognizing that death occurred as a result of strangulation. Her decision was the result of long legal proceedings with state prosecutors and caused a violent reaction of the public - from applause to tears in the courtroom.
After the verdict was sentenced to Varoshiot, it was transferred from criminal to the civilian department. Later, she publicly stated that the chairman of the court of Limassol tried to put pressure on her in order to change the conclusions in the other two cases of death, which she made with special opinion.
Cases when a judge does not receive a constant appointment after the completion of a two -year trial period is extremely rare. At the time of publication, an official statement from the Supreme Judicial Council was not made.
