solo exhibition by Alexandria Coe at 125 Space

125 Space is pleased to present the solo exhibition Figures in Suspension: Unbinding the Body by internationally renowned artist, Alexandria Coe.

The exhibition brings together a set of drawings and paintings that explore the human form as a transitional zone, caught between observation and abstraction, presence and withdrawal.

Based on the rigorous practice of drawing from nature, using models, Coe distills the body into its elemental components: line, mass and gesture. Through disciplined acts of restraint and omission, she allows form to emerge organically, creating figures that remain in a state of balanced ambiguity. These silhouettes appear soft, indistinct and floating within an undefined spatial and psychological field.

At the conceptual core of the exhibition is the concept of disengagement – a deliberate dismantling of the symbolic, cultural and aesthetic regimes that traditionally dictate how the body is interpreted. Eschewing narrative, overt expression and hierarchical composition, Coe's works overturn fixed concepts and the coded logic of the gaze.

The body is not presented as a static image or object, but as a variable structure, constantly open to reconfiguration. Staticity functions as a dominant condition throughout the series. The figures lie, stretch, or hover without theatrical ostentation or dramatization, refusing both representation and idealization. In this suspension, the body exists without imposition, inhabiting a space where value is neither imposed nor withdrawn, but maintained in a state of suspension.

The drawing functions simultaneously as method and proposal, mediating the tension between the immediacy of visual perception and an internal, hypothetical catalog. Through processes of reduction and repetition, Coe activates disengagement as a quiet, restorative gesture – loosening inherited semantic markers and repositioning the body as a site of possibility rather than a site of resolution.
