Construction of the Paphos – Polis Chrysochous road has been delayed for 3.5 years

Despite repeated calls to remove the huge and unjustified delay in the project caused by the contractor, the contractor has made no effort to resume work. Instead, the contractor requested an extension of the project by 59 months and additional payments in the amount of 36 million euros.

The government decided to terminate the contract with the current contractor and re-tender. The road, which should make access to the northwestern coast of Cyprus easier, was due to be completed this year.

According to a November 11 announcement from the Department of Public Works, a two-week notice letter was sent to the contractor's representative giving notice of the termination of the employment relationship.

Director of the Department of Public Works Lefteris Eleftheriou guaranteed that the road will be ready within three years after the new tender.

Polis Mayor Chrysochousa Yotis Papachristofi called the termination of the contract "an event that should have happened months ago." He recalled that today the project is only 30% completed.

Polis Chrysochous is a popular holiday destination. Guests come here for the traditional atmosphere, silence and tranquil nature. However, local authorities insist that the only way for the city to develop is through modern development.

The Supreme Court upheld the decision of the first instance court and rejected the collective appeal of the owners of land along the Paphos - Polis Chrysochous highway. This lawsuit slowed down work on the construction of a new road.
