Cyprus has seen a significant increase in interest in environmentally friendly vehicles.
According to the latest data from the statistics office, from January to November 2024, electric vehicles accounted for 4% of total new registrations, while hybrid vehicles accounted for 36.9%. Overall, vehicle registrations on the island increased by 10.1% to 46,780, up 4,280 from the same period in 2023.
However, November 2024 saw a slight decline, with registrations down 3.7% to 3,850, down from 3,997 in November last year. In particular, registration of passenger cars decreased by 10% to 2,920 units.
However, the total number of passenger car registrations since the beginning of the year has increased by 6.5%, amounting to 36,360 units. Of these, 39.5% were new and 60.5% were used. Interestingly, petrol vehicles now make up 48.9% of the passenger car fleet, down from 58.2% in 2023, while the share of diesel vehicles remained stable at 10.1%.
At the same time, there was noticeable growth in the truck segment, the number of which increased by 30.6% to 5,355 units. In particular, the number of light trucks increased by 33.7%, and tractor-trailers by an impressive 54.2%.
Registrations of two-wheelers are also showing a positive trend: the number of mopeds with an engine capacity of less than 50 cc. cm increased by 115.7%, and mechanized bicycles - by 16.1%.
Despite the overall increase, the number of rental cars decreased by 29.7%. The number of registrations of city and intercity buses has also dropped sharply, from 306 in 2023 to 127 this year.
These data highlight the growing trend towards greener modes of transport and changes in consumer preferences in Cyprus.
