On the morning of November 4, Lellos Dimitriadis Square in Nicosia, where the film was being filmed, turned into a battlefield due to the fact that Turkish flags were planted there.
According to information provided by the Nicosia Municipality, one of the concerned passers-by noticed the Turkish flags and posted the video online, urging people to come to the site and investigate. As a result, a crowd gathered in the square and almost started a fight with members of the film crew.
The mayor of Nicosia, Charalambos Pruntzos, personally arrived at the scene and asked the film crew to remove the flags to avoid further escalation of the situation.
According to the municipality, the film's producers received official permission in advance to film in Lellos Dimitriadis Square. However, as clarified, the mayor’s office was not informed that Turkish flags were planned to be installed for one of the scenes.
A standard filming notice was also posted on the square, without specifying details of the scenes or symbols used.
The film, which is filmed in Nicosia, is based on the novel Eastern Mediterranean. Lellos Dimitriadis Square was chosen because of its resemblance to Seraglio Square, which was under Turkish control during the communal clashes in Cyprus. According to the script, the episode was supposed to convey a festive atmosphere, which is why Turkish flags appeared on the set.
