Despite the recent rains, the situation in Cypriot reservoirs remains critical: the filling level not only has not increased, but has dropped to 9.9% - below the critical level of 10%.
According to experts, there was not enough rainfall in the catchment areas, which means that the water inflow was again zero.
Water Development Department (WDD) Senior Executive Director, Yanna Economidou, said: “We have crossed a psychological and factual limit. Overall occupancy is less than 10% and our reserves continue to dwindle daily.”
Meteorological Service spokesman Andreas Chrysanthou confirms: “The rain of the last three days is a drop in the ocean. We need full downpours, otherwise the problem will not be solved.”
The condition of individual reservoirs, where there is absolutely no water left, is of particular concern:
Mavrokolymposa - 0% Argaki - 0% Vyzakia - 0.1%
This year's figure (9.9%) is significantly lower than last year, when the occupancy rate was 25.2%.
The anti-record for the entire history of observations remains in 2008 - only 3.1%.
But it will be even worse!
Temperatures will rise to 29°C this coming weekend, increasing evaporation.
The seasonal forecast for November–January promises only 50–75% of normal precipitation, which is unlikely to stabilize the situation.
Economou reminds that: “Although Cyprus has built new facilities and desalination plants, water demands have tripled since 1990.”
Rainfall on November 17 was only 15% of normal, and if the situation does not change in the coming days, the flow of water into the dams could be the lowest in a decade.
The situation remains tense, and water services urge the population to save water and be careful about its use.
