Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan and Turkmenistan officially recognized Turkey as a "conqueror" in Cyprus.
These countries supported the decisions of the UN Security Council 541 and 550.
Turkey's relations with the central Asian members of the Turkish States (OTS) Organization (OTS) have reached their lowest point, as Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan have declared their support for Cyprus' sovereignty, essentially destroying OTS's efforts.
In a joint statement at the European Union-Central Asia Summit in Samarkand on April 4, the three Central Countries explicitly voted in voted in decisions 541 (1983) and 550 (1984) of the UN Security Council, which condemned the declaration of the self-proclaimed "self-proclaimed"
The statement states: "The EU and the countries of Central Asia have confirmed their strong commitment to the decisions of the UN Security Council 541 and 550 and noted that the development of their relationships depends on compliance with this principle."
While the Turkish Cypriot "authorities" had expected that OTS officials would travel to occupied northern Cyprus as a step towards recognition, they instead saw three OTS member states open embassies and upgrade their diplomatic relations with the Republic of Cyprus.
Paragraph 4 of the statement emphasizes the commitment of the parties to respect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all states in the International Forums and to avoid measures that will violate this principle.
The Turkish Foreign Ministry has maintained a remarkable silence for these developments, not making public statements either on the opening of embassies in Nicosia or for the statement of the Summit, although this does not exclude diplomatic initiatives in camera.
The time is particularly important, as it follows the first informal conference for Cyprus after four years. UN Secretary -General Antonio Guterres announced on March 18 in Geneva that the talks will be repeated in late July, despite Turkey's and Turkish Cypriot leader Ersin Tatar to block UN Cyprus Initiatives.
From the Geneva Conference in 2021, Turkey and Tatar refuse to discuss any issues with the UN beyond the recognition of occupied northern Cyprus, promoting the solution of the two states and utilizing Turkey's influence on OTS to promote this position.
Tatar attended the OTS Summit in Biskek in 2024 as "honored guest", appearing in official photos next to other OTS leaders, sparking strong reactions from both Cyprus and the European Union.
The Turkish newspaper "Türkiye" recorded the reactions to these developments. Professor Fak Aliberli of Azerbaijan's National Academy of Sciences said: "We all expected that the TRNC would join the Turkish States Organization and that the brotherly countries would open embassies there. To be honest."
