Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides and Turkish Cypriot leader Ersin Tatar have reached a number of agreements.
The talks took place on October 15 at UN headquarters in New York at an informal tripartite dinner that was described as “very good” by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.
At the meeting, which lasted about an hour and a half, the leaders agreed to hold an informal meeting with the guarantors, Greece and Turkey, on a date to be set by the UN. An important outcome of the discussions was the agreement to continue the meeting in Cyprus to further strengthen confidence-building measures, including the opening of new checkpoints.
Christodoulides emphasized that during the meeting he recalled the need to follow agreed principles and EU laws, noting that he had not heard new proposals from Tatar. However, the Turkish Cypriot leader confirmed his readiness to continue the dialogue.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres expressed the UN's commitment to promoting a peaceful resolution of the Cyprus issue in the interests of all Cypriots and future generations.
