The President of Cyprus spoke about goals, plans and attitude to criticism

In an interview with the Phileleftheros newspaper, Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides, who has held office since March 2023, touched on important issues of domestic and foreign policy, and also responded to criticism.

According to the president, the government plans to soon present a package of measures aimed at reducing tax pressure for families and small businesses. Tax reform will be a key tool to support the middle class.

About the Cyprus issue

Resolving the Cyprus issue remains a priority for the president. Christodoulides stressed that he continues to make efforts to resume negotiations under the auspices of the UN. “My goal is to find a fair and viable solution that will serve the interests of all citizens of Cyprus,” he said.

About criticism

The president says he is open to criticism, but believes some attacks from the opposition are related to rejection of the 2023 election results. “Some of my most vehement opponents have never come to terms with the people's choice. But my duty is to work for all citizens, regardless of their political preferences,” the president said.

About international relations

Christodoulides pointed out the importance of cooperation in the energy sector and emphasized that the development of Cyprus' natural resources will take place in strict accordance with international law. In addition, strategic partnerships with the European Union and other international organizations will be strengthened.

The President confirmed that the decision to invite FBI specialists to assist in the fight against corruption was made within one day. Asked about the possible candidacy of former Auditor General of Cyprus and anti-corruption activist Odysseas Michailidis in the 2028 presidential elections, Christodoulides expressed satisfaction that his own victory in 2023, achieved without the support of two major parties, had inspired many citizens to consider political participation. life of the country. He emphasized that every citizen of the Republic of Cyprus has the right to stand as a candidate and participate in the democratic process.

Rumors of a government reshuffle

Responding to rumors about a possible reshuffle in the government, the president said that such an issue is not currently on the agenda. He emphasized that the government is focused on implementing its priorities and plans for 2025, which will be dedicated to the digital transformation of the country. Christodoulides noted that in January it is planned to present a detailed program of action aimed at modernizing and digitalizing public services.
