The Troodos Mountains in Cyprus are currently experiencing a tense weather situation due to heavy snowfall that began in the early hours of Friday, January 9th.
Law enforcement agencies are on high alert and are warning drivers about difficult road conditions, where snow cover and thick fog significantly reduce visibility and make driving dangerous.
According to police, the roads from Troodos Square to the top of Olympos have become slippery and can only be driven by vehicles with four-wheel drive or equipped with snow chains, especially in areas with steep inclines and descents. Motorists are strongly advised to reduce speed, maintain a safe distance and keep their headlights on to avoid accidents and unforeseen situations on snowy sections of the road.
Snowfall in Troodos is not uncommon in winter, but this series of precipitation has become particularly intense: roads are already covered in wet snow, and thick fog makes the situation worse, reducing visibility to several meters. Landslides have been reported in some places, another factor that requires increased attention from drivers and tourists planning a trip to the mountainous region.
The Meteorological Service had previously warned of a sharp drop in air temperatures and possible snowfall in Troodos, as well as partly cloudy skies and rain in the lowlands. This transitional period of winter weather is accompanied not only by snow, but also by strong winds, thunderstorms, and in some places even possible hail, which creates additional difficulties on the roads and transport infrastructure.
Despite the difficult weather conditions, there have been no reports of serious incidents or widespread accidents, but emergency services are on standby and urge all road users to take the current situation into account and plan their journeys according to possible delays.
Such snowfall in the Troodos mountains makes winter holidays in Cyprus especially picturesque and attractive for nature lovers, but at the same time reminds of the need for caution and compliance with all traffic rules in the mountains in winter.
