On August 29, the government of the Republic of Cyprus approved two important bills. Firstimpliescreating the position of an ombudsman who will protect the rights of patients. The second one isratificationInternational Labor Organization Convention on the Elimination of Violence and Harassment in the Workplace. Both documents will come into force after approval by Parliament.
WHAT DID THE HEAD OF THE MINISTRY OF HEALTH SAY?
“This bill is not just a piece of legislation, it is a statement of our commitment to supporting patients, protecting their rights and improving the quality of medical services provided,” stated the Minister of Health of the Republic of Cyprus, Michalis Damianos.
He said the ministry was “taking a decisive step towards protecting the rights of patients both inside and outside GeSY [National Health System].” The Patient Ombudsman will have the power to review patient complaints and organize educational programs and awareness campaigns.
WHAT DID THE HEAD OF THE MINISTRY OF LABOR SAY?
“The constructive participation of social partners in the dialogue reflects the general approach of the state and society to protecting equality and eliminating discrimination, ensuring a modern working environment free from violence and harassment,” said Labor Minister Yiannis Panayiotou.
The new institutional framework, according to him, provides for specific responsibilities and procedures, on the one hand, for the state, on the other, for employers, as well as penalties for offenders. All this “testifies to the political will of the government to improve working conditions and the quality of life of citizens.”
