Cyclopempti (τσικνοπέμπτη) is a traditional Greek holiday, which is celebrated on Thursday nine days before the beginning of Great Lent.
The name can be translated as “smoky Thursday”, since on this day it smells of smoke from fried meat everywhere.
What is happening in the cyclepempti?
The main tradition is grill frying. Families, friends, and even entire municipalities arrange mass treats. Carnival atmosphere - on this day, holiday processions and parties often take place. Living music and dances - many cities arrange folk festivities. Preparations for the post - cyclepempti is considered one of the last days when you can enjoy the meat before the great post.
This day is especially popular in Cyprus, in Greece and among the Greeks around the world, as it opens the last weeks of funny carnival events before the start of the Orthodox post.
In anticipation of the cycle -opempti (smoky Thursday), the municipalities of the Cyprus announced a rich program of festive events. Guests are waiting for dances, traditional treats and live music, creating the atmosphere of the carnival throughout the island.
