Police continue a fruitless search for prisoner Doros Theofanos, who escaped on Thursday 26 September in Paphos during leave granted to him to visit relatives.
As police spokesman Christos Andreou said on the Alpha Kalimera program, the search is being carried out using a helicopter, sniffer dogs and drones, but there are suspicions that the criminal could have fled to northern Cyprus.
Theophanous was taken to his family home in Paphos, accompanied by four prison guards as well as members of the MMAD police unit. At some point he managed to escape.
Authorities believe the escape was planned in advance, possibly with the assistance of his relatives or others with ties to the prisons. Three MMAD employees involved in transporting the prisoner were suspended from work. The police have already detained two suspects - the 68-year-old father of the fugitive and a 43-year-old man.
Police say Doros Theofanos is armed with a gun and has no intention of surrendering to authorities. It is noted that the criminal may head to Istanbul and then to Colombia. This choice is due to the fact that there are no extradition agreements between Cyprus and Latin America, which allows a fugitive to evade justice. The police continue to search, but so far without success.
