The Cabinet of Ministers has approved a bill that will allow police officers and firefighters in Cyprus to run for parliament.
The document, prepared by the Ministry of Justice and Public Order, amends the legislation governing the activities of the police and fire services. Previously, existing regulations prohibited representatives of these services from participating in parliamentary elections.
The reason for the changes was the decision of the Supreme Court, which declared this ban unconstitutional, pointing out that it violates the principle of separation of powers and puts law enforcement officers in an unequal position compared to other government employees.
Following this, the Ministry of Justice prepared a bill allowing members of the security services to run for parliament. Today the document was approved by the Cabinet of Ministers and will soon be presented to parliament for discussion and voting.
