The 53-year-old citizen of Ukraine, whom the police suspect of brutal murder of 34-year-old Irina Papakits in her house in Chlorak last Sunday, was transferred to the atalassa psychiatric hospital.
According to the police, the man underwent an examination by the state psychiatrist, who concluded that he needed hospitalization. The suspect will be under guard in a specialized institution until doctors recognize him as capable of participating in the trial.
The investigation continues. Meanwhile, on Saturday, relatives and acquaintances said goodbye to Irina Papakits, who became the new victim of Themicide. The 34-year-old woman from Ukraine had a Greek passport and lived in Chlorak with a 14-year-old son. It was he who witnessed the terrible tragedy: the boy suffered during the attack, but, fortunately, survived.
The funeral took place at 16:00 in the church in Chlorak. Relatives and close women asked to refrain from laying wreaths and expressed a request instead to make donations in favor of her minor son, who was left without a mother.
The case in Chloraka was another loud episode in a series of tragedies related to violence against women in Cyprus. According to human rights organizations, the number of victims of the femicide on the island in recent years causes serious concern. Activists and representatives of public movements insist on the need to strengthen the protection measures of women in vulnerable situations, as well as the introduction of programs for early detection of cases of domestic violence.
In recent years, the police and the Ministry of Justice of Cyprus have been taking steps to create a “single mechanism” to prevent such crimes, but the tragedy in Chloraca again recalled that the protection of women remains the most important task of society.
