The explosion of a mobile phone in the pocket of a schoolboy in Nicosia has sparked serious debate among local officials.
Many expressed the need to ban the use of phones in school. But what causes a device to overheat and what should you pay attention to when using mobile phones?
As Michalis Nikolaou, an electrical engineer at the Department of Electromechanical Services, explained, a mobile phone explosion usually occurs due to the mobile phone battery, after some short circuit and overheating.
In this context, he emphasized that we should not use a mobile phone that has an obvious electrical or mechanical problem or has been damaged due to previous use. That is, having a cracked screen or frame that could allow water or sweat to enter the battery and cause a short circuit. Another problem that all mobile phone users face is overheating of the device. Nikolaou clarified that modern smartphones have an operating system that monitors the temperature of the battery and if it overheats, the device turns off for safety reasons. An important sign of device overheating is a swollen cell phone battery. In this case, we will have to require repair or complete replacement of the device. Nicolaou stressed that the manufacturer's original charger should be used along with the factory cable. Another factor that may cause the mobile phone to overheat, is poor charging of the device overnight. The temperature of a mobile phone can also be affected by excessive use of games or using multiple mobile applications at the same time.
