On Thursday evening, October 24, Turkish Northern Cyprus police arrested a 21-year-old man who was spotted running naked through the streets of the Mandres area.
Video of the incident quickly went viral on social media, attracting public attention. Police identified the man and arrested him that evening. As it became known, the young man came to Northern Cyprus to study.
On Friday, October 25, the man appeared in court. At the trial, he burst into tears and the police were forced to calm him down. Police officer Nevzat Gan explained in court that the charge related to “actions contrary to public morals and honor.”
At the trial, the young man said his father faced “great financial difficulties” to send him to university. However, in Nicosia he was faced with high rental costs and that his current landlord "constantly gives him problems and even yells" at him.
“I became a slave to my own money,” and added that the naked run incident in the Mandres district was preceded by a dispute with the landlord.
“We try to study here, but no one respects us! There is no peace in Cyprus!” - he said.
Judge Nuray Necdet ordered the man to be held in custody for a period not exceeding 20 days pending trial and to undergo a full psychological examination at Baris Psychiatric Hospital in northern Nicosia.
