Over 50 tons of humanitarian aid in Limassol for Gaza

More than 50 tons of humanitarian aid has arrived at Limassol port, set to be shipped to Gaza in the coming days, the foreign ministry said on Tuesday.

The aid, received from the order of Malta, will head to the Israeli port of Ashdod, according to ministry spokesman Theodoros Gotsis.

Speaking to the Cyprus News Agency, Gotsis said during Foreign Minister Constantinos Kombos’ meeting with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Monday, the focus was placed on humanitarian aid efforts.

He highlighted that since December, financial support has been activated through the Amalthea project, based in Cyprus and funded by the United Arab Emirates.

Gotsis confirmed that the current shipment will be followed by others, with the aid expected to depart for Ashdod by mid February.

Strict protocols are being adhered to, he said, with the aid scanned in Cyprus before being transported. Upon arrival at Ashdod, it will be delivered into the care of UNOPS, ensuring the aid reaches those in need in Gaza.

To date, approximately 24,000 tons of humanitarian aid have been sent through the Amalthea sea corridor from Cyprus.
