A tragedy occurred in the neonatal department of one of the hospitals in the occupied territories of Cyprus.
According to local media, staff mistakenly used pure alcohol instead of water to prepare formula to feed seven babies. As a result, one of the babies died, six others are in critical condition and require intubation. Parents are temporarily prohibited from visiting their children.
The relatives of the deceased child, who was only 20 days old, reported that he was absolutely healthy and was preparing for discharge. Initially, the hospital management tried to hush up the incident, but it became public knowledge when the parents of the deceased baby were called to give statements to the police.
An investigation is now underway to determine how this mixing of substances could have occurred. This case is not the first in a series of other tragic events involving the death of infants in the occupied territories. Turkey itself is also on trial for a criminal group that is accused of deliberately contributing to the deaths of newborns in order to collect insurance benefits.
