New school for difficult teenagers in Nicosia

New school for difficult teenagers in Nicosia

Over the next two weeks, the Ministry of Education, Sports and Youth will announce the opening of a new educational institution, called the Alternative School. Children with delinquent behavior will be directed to it.

The school was supposed to open earlier, but in October 2024, the Ministry of Education plans broke. An experimental educational institution, which has no analogues in Cyprus, was supposed to work next to the prestigious all -Chipper gymnasium in the center of Nicosia. However, the parents opposed such a plan, and the Ministry of Education was forced to retreat.

Over the past time past, the ministry has found a new premises for the school. In working with students, pedagogical teachers, therapists and other specialists who are designed to work with the individual characteristics of each student will play an active role. At the first, pilot, the stage of the project will be studied by four to five people.

Meanwhile, parents and students complain about the behavior of some school teachers in completely ordinary elementary schools. Teachers, under the pretext that school classes should be ventilated at breaks, expel students outside, despite bad weather. Parents believe that this requirement does not affect the health of children, especially primary school students.

The Ministry of Education said that the decision to send or not to send children to the street remains with school administrations. This is necessary for hygiene reasons, as well as so that children can socialize.

Parents and students are also unhappy with practice when the school administration locks toilets to the key. So they really do in gymnasiums and lyceums during the lessons. If the student asks for permission to go to the toilet, he must get the key to the school cleaning lady, who then needs to be returned. This practice is explained by the desire of school administrations to prevent cases of vandalism in toilets.
