On April 5, in a residential complex, where immigrants lived in a suburbs of the Larnaki Oroclini, serious riots passed.
As a result of the attack, a 27-year-old man was in critical condition, and a two-month-old child received serious injuries. The incident revealed negligence from the state, which was aware of problems in the complex since 2017.
Men in hoods, allegedly associated with criminal groups, tried to expel the African immigrants who illegally lived in a complex. At the same time, public services have repeatedly received information about an unsafe situation, but measures have not been taken.
Problems with the complex began back in 2017, when the leader of the Oroxlini community, now the deputy mayor of Larnaki, Neophytos Facondis, officially notified the administration of the Larnak district of the catastrophic state of buildings. Despite the decision on the unsuitability of housing, published in February 2022, it was never executed.
The state continued to pay the rent to the owner of the complex, despite the terrible living conditions, and attempts to stop payments were partial. Complaints of unsanitary conditions, theft of water and the threat to health were ignored.
In 2024, the complex was bought by a company with foreign shareholders, which tried to organize a “peaceful eviction” through a private person for a reward, but eviction ended with a mass fight.
The police say that she was not notified of the planned operation and emphasizes that any actions on eviction demanded a court order that was not received.
The police continue to search for the participants in the attack.
The mayor of Larnaki Andreas Virace said that it is necessary to immediately find a solution, since "living in such conditions is simply inhuman."
