The second case of bacterial meningitis is registered in Cyprus.
This time, the disease was diagnosed in a six -month -old baby from pathos. Doctors decided to transfer the child to the Makarios hospital in Nicosia, since this medical institution is better equipped for specialized assistance to infants.
A day earlier, bacterial meningitis was found in a high school student from Limasol, who was also hospitalized. According to preliminary data, both cases are not interconnected.
In accordance with the protocols of the Ministry of Health, all persons in contact with the sick received preventive treatment. Experts continue to observe to prevent the possible spread of infection.
The President of the Cyprus Pediatric Society Mikhalis Anastasiadis emphasized that bacterial meningitis is an extremely dangerous infection, unlike viral meningitis, which proceeds in an easier form.
Bacterial meningitis can cause serious complications, including brain damage, hearing loss and other neurological disorders. In severe cases, the disease can lead to death, if you do not start treatment in a timely manner.
The main measure of meningitis prevention is vaccination. The national vaccination calendar includes vaccines against meningococcal, pneumococcal and hemophilic infection, which help reduce the risk of infection.
In addition, it is important to observe hygiene, avoid contact with the sick and at the first signs of malaise (high temperature, rigidity of the occipital muscles, vomiting, photophobia) to see a doctor immediately.
